Who knew nuns could be so much fun? In “Sister Act,” currently playing at Toby’s Columbia, nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier shows an order of nuns that there’s more to life than penance and genuflection. And if this musical is good enough to get those serious nuns moving and grooving, what chance does the audience have?

Many musicals contain broad societal themes or historical events as the backdrop for the production. Sister Act is not one of them.
